I suspect we agree on the tech skills of the average tech reporter, but I have a lower estimation of the technical skills of the average person.

I know that many of us have had success for a long time on linux, but this is a tech reporter, so they’re more tech-savvy than the average bear, and they’re referencing very real and concrete usability issues they had genuinely trying to use linux. I’m not sure downvotes and ridicule are the best position for us to take, here, if we’re looking to convince folks to make the switch.

Oh dope! I see what you’re saying now — thanks for linking an awesome paper. Sorry if I came off a bit snippy.
Also, for those driving by who don’t wanna click through:
It was found that total emission of greenhouse gas (carbon equivalent) for one gallon of orange juice produced under the scenarios of without and with resetting was 1.92 and 1.60 pounds, respectively
Edit: am I missing something? I don’t see any discussion of the difference in energy costs for shipping concentrates vs juices, just for production of concentrates vs juices?

You may not know the answers to these questions, but they do exist and the market is aware of them. It is, in fact, cheaper to ship orange juice concentrate than orange juice.

Ugh. Why are we shipping all this water around? Concentrate is a much more efficient way to distribute orange juice than as juice.

I don’t like how they’re training us to be okay with airports getting shut down. I worry it’s preparation for the big airport shutdown, which would be very bad.

It’s not a lot of Russian, and I am not a native speaker, but because Russian isn’t a word order language, there are some sentences in Russian an automatic translation service is unlikely to produce (since you can almost always retain the same word order as the original language, so why wouldn’t you?). This sample uses no such construction.

I think what concerns me about these is if LLMs learn to pass information through posts that look like boring social media posts, but had another, embedded meaning. Spies used newspapers to pass messages, posting innocuous-looking want ads and letters to the editor, and exotic minds are like to come up with exotic encodings we might not even recognize.

Can we stop pretending that ICE has anything to do with immigration yet? Is there plan to deport “illegal immigrants” from Italy? Are they going to be stopping Italians to ask them for their American passports on the streets of Milan? They’re not a law enforcement agency, they’re brownshirts.

I don’t understand why nobody ever takes the annuity. It’s more money! You can’t spend the whole thing all at once and then regret it! You can tell everyone that comes begging that you can’t help them because you don’t actually have the money! I would take the annuity, but I guess that’s why I don’t play the lottery.

Idk, maybe if you don’t want your house bombed you shouldn’t invade sovereign nations?
I’m not entirely sure this is true? If everyone migrated to Linux, tech publications like the verge would become more important, not less, because they wouldn’t have the company that publishes the software to compete with for page views.
