That viewpoint depends on comparing oneself positively with gross caricatures of historical racists and congratulating oneself on not stooping to that level - as if it only counts as racism if you’re keeping black slaves or wearing a hood and lynching “uppity n___s,” and since we’re not doing that, we’re perfectly fine.

And awareness of institutional racism and of critical race theory and the lasting impacts of historical racism threaten that shallow bit of undeserved self-affirmation, which is exactly why they view it as some sort of personal attack.
