I’d attribute that to people voting straight ticket. The typical American doesn’t put that much thought into who they’re electing, you’re not gonna see that many people voting for a Republican president and then voting Democrat for their senator.

The biggest issue I see is that there’s really no motivation on either side to reopen the govt. If any Dems capitulate to Trump they’ll 100% lose their seats as soon as they go for reelection. On the other side, Reps have long since stopped giving a fuck about any of their constituents and only care about appeasing Trump, so they can’t capitulate either.
I think what’s most likely at this point is that the shutdown lasts through Thanksgiving, and we end up with an air traffic mess of hitherto unseen proportions. It’ll likely be enough of an embarrassment that we’ll see support for a clean CR that will push the issue until after Christmas, and then we’ll probably shutdown again.
You joke now, but realistically the kinda thing that will cause a civil war is if Trump starts withholding federal funding from blue states over bullshit like this. If the states that prop up the US economy start getting nothing in return, and are basically paying tithe to a king, serious calls for independence are gonna start coming because those states will have nothing to lose.

Is there anyway to like, siphon off the energy though? Like say, you pedaling produces 600kJ/hr. You have 400kJ/hr going into the bike to produce motion, but then 200kJ/hr goes into a battery. You’d move slower but generate stored potential energy.

This is kinda one of those issues where everyone involved sucks. Maduro rigging an election and crushing protests is bad.
