“Fear of birth rates is a way of feeding into this anxiety of national identity, who we are and how we are being threatened,” Wilson said. “Just look at the words of MAGA itself: Make America Great Again. It’s a very conservative view because it’s saying that in the past, there was a kind of ideal America and we’ve been knocked off track. We need to reestablish that old identity — even if it’s a myth.”
The anxiety is closely tied to anti-immigration policies as well. Immigration could be seen as a solution to the falling birth rate — but opponents connect migration with a loss of culture, loss of control in democratic institutions and loss of status.
For the right, Wilson said, “the question becomes, how do we win back the culture through majorities? How do we win elections and guarantee future elections? We make majorities through procreation — it is a kind of really basic arithmetic.”
Elon Musk is pronatalism yet he took mine and all of my colleagues jobs months ago from the federal government. The ultra rich billionaires are all about having Americans have children, but hoard wealth and are obsessed with replacing workers with AI. Our conservative government wants US citizens to have more children and then slashes or repeals social benefits.
Even if I had children how could I support them? I’m 40, I’m going through my third economic crisis in my lifetime. I’m struggling to feed myself, let alone find a woman that would accept me enough to have children with me.
If these people want babies then they need to make regular peoples lives better and easier. I understand that these people are FAR removed from the normal working class person, but this seems like such a straight forward and logical step that they simply don’t comprehend.
The rich elite need teenage wage slaves to keep the cogs of retail and fast food running. Without those a large portion of everything collapses.
This is why Republicans were fine with abortion when it’s leaders viewed it as reducing non-white population in America. Now that machine is in need of future indoctrinated white voters instead.
