The car hits their abdomen and chest and pushes them under the car instead of onto the hood. My Volvo has a low, long hood with a padded engine cover and is among the best for pedestrian crashes.

They lost the bumper and made the transition to the bonnet much smoother. Volvo of course did it 10 years prior
